Where To Ski In Switzerland: Our 5 Favorite Resorts

The ski season is just around the corner, and that right there, is probably one of the most exciting things we’ve had to look forward to in this crazy year called 2020. Though we’re still unsure what this winter holds with the pandemic, what is certain is that most (if not all) of our ski resorts will be opening in just a couple of weeks with all the health and safety precautions in place. So let’s have something to look forward to, shall we?

Skiing in Switzerland is truly a heaven-sent experience for avid skiers coming from near and far: Not only are the slopes as amazing as they’re hyped up to be with incredible views at every turn, but there’s truly a resort for every taste, every style and every level. We’re willing to bet that we can find a ski resort that’s as perfectly suited for you as a perfectly tailored suit… How’s that for personalization?

What’s more, our ski resorts are more often than not synonymous with cute, chocolate box villages, and located nearby other cities and attractions. The latter is actually more important to mention than you might think: as snow is (unfortunately) becoming more unpredictable as the years go by, it’s reassuring to know that there is always a backup plan with things to do in case you’re not able to ski.

With more than 300 ski resorts around the country, the choice can be overwhelming… so many resorts, so little time. Don’t hesitate to contact us for your personalised travel advice by clicking here. In the meantime, we thought we’d narrow it down for you with a selection of some of our favorite ski resorts. Happy skiing!

For Those Who Seek World-Class Skiing in an Authentic Setting: Saas-Fee

The Capra Hotel Saas Fee, Valais, Switzerland

Welcome to Saas Fee, where authenticity is synonymous with some of the best slopes in the world! Often bypassed by its more famous neighbour, Zermatt, we’re big believers that Saas Fee truly is one of the alps’ best kept secrets. It’s no wonder it’s often referred to as the “Pearl of the Alps”.

Ride the Metro Alpin, the world’s highest underground funicular railway, and you’ll find yourself with a choice 150km of slopes for all levels set between 1’600m and 3’600m in altitude, guaranteeing snow year round. What’s more, you’ll be surrounded by no less than 13 4’000m mountain peaks, so the views aren’t too bad either.

After a day (or half day) of skiing and a well-deserved hot shower back at your fabulous hotel, we love to walk around the car-free cozy, yet lively chalet village to mingle with the locals on a sunny terrace and sip on a Swiss hot chocolate or Gluhwein… To finish off your day as well as you started it, head to the spa of your boutique chalet hotel for some much needed R&R, or go straight for dinner at one of the family-owned restaurants that serve the finest Swiss cuisine! Bon Appétit!

For Those Who Want To Experience What Swiss Snow Dreams Are Made Of: Engadine

Did you know that the Engadine region of Graubunden has been a proud host of the Winter Olympics twice in its time? But even though it continues to frequently host world ski events, a beautiful testament to the quality of its 365km of slopes, it is an idyllic ski destination no matter your level. The best part? You’ll be rewarded at lunch time with a delicious gourmet meal (and sublime views!) at one of the many cozy mountain restaurants.

What’s great about the Engadine is that it’s also a playground with endless possibilities if you’re not up for skiing, or if you’re travelling with non-skiers: from snow-shoeing to visiting its traditional villages, and everything you can imagine in between, you can easily spend up to two weeks here and always find something new and exciting to do. For Those Who Want To Escape The Hustle And Bustle: Melchsee-Frutt

Frutt Lodge in Melchsee-Frutt, Switzerland

Let us take you to a mountain paradise, high up above at 1’920m in the beautifully untouched region of Melchsee, known predominantly by Swiss locals and one of our favourite finds to date.

The experience starts the moment you arrive, as you get whisked away by a gondola from the base station up to the small car-free village. This is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life on the road less travelled, as you find yourself lost amidst the fresh air of the beautiful mountains, with just your hotel and a couple of stores and restaurants in close proximity.

During the day, enjoy the 36km of slopes that leave from the doorstep of your hotel. It’s the ideal place for families, those looking for something low-key or perhaps even first timers. In the evening, take the time to relax, enjoy the views, unwind at the spa and have a gourmet meal at the restaurant of your hotel… can life really get any better than this?

For Those Looking For The Full Package: Zermatt

Matterhorn Zermatt Switzerland Ski Resort

It’s safe to say Zermatt is probably Switzerland’s most iconic ski destination, and home to the most photographed mountain in the world: the majestic Matterhorn. It’s one of the best ski destinations for couples and families alike, as it really offers the full package: a cozy chalet village with great window shopping, 360km+ of slopes for all levels, the most breath-taking backdrop at every turn (can one really ever get enough of the Matterhorn?), and some of our favorite on-slope restaurants serving delicious Swiss cuisine with a trendy vibe and a fun atmosphere.

Bonus point: the ski map also covers Italy, so why not visit two countries in one day, and enjoy the most incredible homemade pasta for lunch?

For Those Who Want To Combine Skiing and Sightseeing: Gstaad

Les Pays d'En Haut Switzerland

For those who love a good, easy-going ski day, but also want to make the most of their precious winter holidays with some sightseeing, we’ve got the perfect solution for you: Gstaad. The world-renowned village is at the gateway of 250km of slopes, but it is also strategically set to explore the whole Berner Oberland, even all the way down to Lake Geneva and its UNESCO-protected wine country.

Imagine waking up every day with full flexibility and a myriad of activities to do right from your doorstep. If you choose to go skiing, you have the family-friendly resort of Schönried just around the corner, or the more acclaimed resorts of Adelboden and Les Diablerets a little further away.

Otherwise, immerse yourself in the local traditions and know-hows, have a private apéro in a grotto filled with more than 3’000 cheeses, go dog sledding, dine at one of its award-winning gourmet restaurants, visit the iconic Glacier 3000, go shopping in the glitz and glamour of Gstaad, snow-shoe your way through the winter wonderland or simply sit back and enjoy the views. Life here, is on your own terms.
